Uno degli aspetti più interessanti di Rhythm Section è che ha un’identità, ma al tempo stesso i suoi dischi sono tutti diversi l’uno dall’altro. Fiumi d’inchiostro (virtuale) sono stati spesi per l’etichetta di Bradley Zero, cercando di descrivere a parole la formula vincente di una label che ha sede a Peckham ma ascolta e parla a tutto il mondo; per cui non ci inoltreremo anche noi in questa discussione, alla quale c’è poco da aggiungere oltre quello che è stato già detto.
La release di Neue Grafik entra perfettamente in quest’ottica. Prodotta da un artista francese, guarda nettamente alla scena broken-beats e nu-jazz londinese, con sei tracce tutte diverse l’una dall’altra.
L’EP inizia con il down-tempo della title-track; passa per “Dance To Yemanja” che potrebbe tranquillamente essere un lavoro di Dego & Kaidi, e sfocia in un quasi inevitabile tributo “To Peckham Rye”, che riecheggia perfettamente il suono del sud-est londinese rappresentato da Rhythm Section. Morbide ed eleganti anche le restanti tre tracce, “Barbe’s Interlude”, “Why You”, e la malinconica “Aulnay’s Tears” dedicata alle vittime della violenza della polizia nei sobborghi parigini lo scorso anno.
Un disco che guarda poco al dancefloor, ma è ricco di profondità. E a dirla tutta, Rhythm Section non ha bisogno di pubblicare dischi puramente da pista. Esce alla fine di questa settimana. http://rhythmsection.lnk.to/RS022

One of the incredible things of Rhythm Section is that it has an identity, and at the same time you could almost say that no two records sound the same. Many lines of text have already been laid down for Bradley Zero’s label, trying to put into words the winning formula of a label rooted in SE15 while talking (and listening) to the world; so we won’t engage in that here, as we don’t really have much to add to what has been extensively said.
This Neue Grafik release fits into that vision perfectly. It comes from a Parisian artist, and strongly nods to London’s broken-beats and nu-jazz scene with six different cuts.
The EP starts with the down-tempo title track; passing by the Dego-&-Kaidi-esque “Dance To Yemanja”, it goes into an almost inevitable ode “To Peckham Rye”, which echoes the sound of the South-East London scene so well captured by Rhythm Section. More smoothness comes with the remaining three tracks, “Barbe’s Interlude”, “Why You”, and the melancholic “Aulnay’s Tears”, dedicated to the victims of police brutality in the Parisian Suburb in 2017.
There is not so much peak-time action on this 12”, but plenty of depth. And frankly, Rhythm Section does not need to put out records just for the dancefloor. It’s coming out at the end of this week. http://rhythmsection.lnk.to/RS022
